Corps of Discovery field trips are informal tours organized upon invitation of a host and guide. SCAR publishes a meeting date, time, and place of the Revolutionary War related sites to be visited. We invite all interested to carpool, join the hike and enjoy informal on-the-ground, interpretive presentations of research. SCAR keeps you posted on the details here.
May 4, 2019 – Camden, SC – Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution (SCAR) presents a Corps of Discovery touring the Battle of Camden site and the Battle of Hobkirk Hill. Join master tour guides and SCAR Fellows David P. Reuwer and Charles B. Baxley for a comprehensive tour of these two important Revolutionary War battlegrounds. Meet at the Camden Battlefield and Longleaf Pine Preserve (1606 Flat Rock Road, 4 miles north of Camden) at 10:00 am to start the tours of the Camden Battlefield. https://www.historiccamden.org/camden-battlefield Dr. Tray Dunaway will talk about the 18th c. restoration forestry on the site. The forestry program has opened up the site so that viewing most of the important military terrain is now possible. We will have an update from the Historic Camden Foundation, new steward of the battlefield and final resting place for hundreds of American and British soldiers, and a report on the new Liberty Trail and its connections to 69 important South Carolina Revolutionary War sites. After a lunch break on your on, gather again at the parking lot for Historic Camden Revolutionary War site (222 South Broad Street, US Hwy 521, Camden) and carpool to Camden’s in town battlefield, Hobkirk Hill. The tours will wrap up at about 4:00 pm. This event is free and the public is invited. Bring your hiking shoes, dress for the weather, the tours go rain or shine.
February 20-21, 2016 – Ebenezer, Ga. – the Southern Campaigns Revolutionary War Roundtable met at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center. This Round Table was followed Saturday afternoon by a Corps of Discovery walking tour. Toured the amazing Revolutionary War earthworks at New Ebenezer, Ga. – a fortified British camp from 1779 to 1782 – with project archaeologist Dan Elliott. On Sunday we followed the 18th c. road from Ebenezer towards Augusta, and the Briar Creek battlefield with project archaeologist Dan Battle. These events were sponsored by Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution and the Georgia American Revolution Preservation Alliance.
November 9, 2014 – Washington, Ga. – Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution will hold a Corps of Discovery car pooled tour to Wilkes County Revolutionary War sites. We toured the Kettle Creek battlefield with the principal archaeologist, drove the colonial road and visited Robert Carr’s Fort battle site in the Ceded Lands.
February 15, 2014 – Clinton, SC – SCAR in partnership with the Musgrove Mill State Historic Site for a program on The Revolutionary War in Laurens County, SC and Corps of Discovery to Revolutionary War sites in the area. Prof. Jim Piecuch presented his research on the removal of the Loyalists in the area in 1778. Prof. Jeff Dennis talk about the 1776 Cherokee War. Ranger Brian Robson talked about the local militia organizations (on both sides). John C. “Jack” Parker, Jr., author of Parker’s Guide, presented his latest research on SC Loyalist militia Maj. William “Bloody Bill” Cunningham’s Bloody Scout raid and we visited the sites of “Bloody Bill’s” massacre of Americans at Hayes Station; Lt. Col. William Washington’s victory over Col. Thomas Water’s Georgia and South Carolina Loyalist militia at Hammond’s Old Store; and the early Whig vs. Tory battle at Lindley’s Fort.
October 27, 2013 – Georgetown, SC – Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution – Corps of Discovery – presents a car pool and walking tour of Georgetown District Revolutionary War sites. Join Gen. Francis Marion scholar Karen L. MacNutt and former American Revolution Magazine editor David P. Reuwer and Charles B. Baxley to see the area’s Revolutionary war sites and learn the stories of South Carolina’s second port city and its defenses.
